Sometimes heartworms might be found in organs aside from the lungs and heart but such infections are rare.TreatmentsMost dogs infected with heartworm could be effectively treated. The goal of treatment is to kill all adult rats with an adulticide and all microfilariae using a microfilaricide. It's crucial to try to achieve this goal using a minimum of harmful effects from medication along with a tolerable amount of complications created by the dying heartworms. Heartworm infected puppies showing no signs or moderate signs have a higher success rate with treatment. Patients with signs of severe heartworm disease can be successfully treated, but the chance of complications and mortality is greater. The existence of severe heartworm disease in a patient along with the presence of additional life-threatening ailments may prevent treatment for heartworm infection.
